IR will get its first waste-to-energy (WtE) conversion unit at Bhubaneswar by January 2020. All waste generated at Bhubaneswar railway station, and the carriage and coaching depot will be converted into light diesel oil that can be used in furnaces and gas that can be used to keep the WtE plant running. This will be done using a patented technology, Polycrack, developed by IR’s Bhubaneswar-located Carriage Repair Workshop. The technology converts multiple feedstock into hydrocarbon liquid fuels, gas, carbon and water. The unit’s initial operating cost will be approximately Rs 9 per day. It will consume the generated diesel oil and biogas to meet its energy requirement.
