The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has approved the setting up of a new sewage treatment plant (STP) at Okhla under the Yamuna Action Plan Phase III. The STP has a treatment capacity of 125 million gallons per day (mgd) and will be the largest wastewater treatment plant in the country. The plant will be fully automated with a SCADA system and will have facilities for both sewage and sludge treatment. The STP will be built over a period of three years at an estimated cost of Rs 11.61 billion. Work has been awarded to Suez Group’s Degremont. DJB has also approved the construction of a 106 mgd water treatment plant (WTP) at Chandrawal to meet the city’s drinking water demand. It will be equipped with advanced ozonisation technology to reduce the high ammonia content by up to 4 parts per million. L&T Construction Limited has won the contract for the development of the WTP, which will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 5.98 billion. DJB also plans to construct 14 mini-STPs in the Najafgarh drainage zone with capacities ranging from 2.5-25 million litres per day (mld).
