Pre-development works near the Ulwe river for the Navi Mumbai International Airport Project, Phase I, have commenced. The scope of work includes flattening of hillocks in the airport area, reclamation of marshland at the site by using rocks and diversion of the Ulwe river. Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Maharashtra government has decided to transfer 250.06 hectares of forest land in Raigad district to City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited for Phase I works of the airport. Of the total forest area to be handed over, 108.61 hectares of land is under mangroves while the remaining 141.46 hectares is reserve forest land.
