Centre announces plans to develop hydrogen highways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has launched a major initiative to develop hydrogen highways in order to promote clean and self-reliant fuel. Around Rs 5 billion has been sanctioned to five consortiums with 37 operational trucks on 10 routes. Around 9 hydrogen refueling stations will be constructed to support the pilots. These corridors will serve as India’s first hydrogen highways.

The trials will run in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kochi, supporting both the vehicle sector and the hydrogen supply chain through new infrastructure. India aims to produce five million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, create 600,000 jobs, and attract Rs 8 trillion in investments, while targeting a reduction in crude oil imports and carbon emissions, which is currently at 87 per cent of demand, costing the nation Rs 22 trillion annually.
