About 14.8 per cent of the work has been completed under the Canal-based Water Supply Project, Ludhiana Surface Water Supply Scheme in Ludhiana, Punjab. Approximately, 20 kilometres (km) of water supply pipelines have been installed, out of a total of 165 km transmission lines and distribution network. Further, material has also been arranged for an additional 25 km of pipeline. Moreover, 70 new overhead water reservoirs are likely to be constructed under the project, of which work has already started on 28 sites. Of the total 50 old overhead water reservoirs that will be rehabilitated under the project, non-destructive testing has been conducted at the 30 existing ones.
The project is being implemented by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation with technical support from the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company. The first phase of the project has a budget of Rs 13.05 billion and an additional sum of Rs 1.54 billion has been earmarked for 10 years of operations and maintenance. Other than this, a sum of Rs 840 million has been reserved for quality assurance under the project.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by February 2025. The project is being jointly financed by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
