Comprehensive rejuvenation plan devised for Gangua drain in Bhubaneshwar

A comprehensive rejuvenation plan is being developed for the Gangua drain in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This is being undertaken by a collaboration of the Water Resources Department (WRD), Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA). The plan aims for urban flood control, proper drainage, improved water quality, etc. It includes the development of the drain through a coordinated engagement of various stakeholders. Reportedly, the renovation of the drain will be carried out by WRD while the management of the septic drains will be undertaken by the Housing and Urban Development Department. The BMC will be supervising the plugging of drains that get discharged into the Gangua drain along with addressing the encroachments around it.

This plan is aligned with the goal to urbanise Bhubaneswar by 2036. Furthermore, a committee is planned to be set up for the periodic review of the rejuvenation works. It will have representation from WRD, BDA, BMC, Water Corporation of Odisha, and the Tourism Department. There are also considerations to replicate the implemented rejuvenation plan for Amanishah Nullah in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Also, sewage treatment plants are being constructed to treat the wastewater before releasing it into water bodies.
