JNPA climbs to 22nd spot globally, retains India’s top container port status

India’s largest container gateway, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), has been ranked 22nd among the world’s top container ports in the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2025. The achievement reflects sustained growth in cargo volumes, operational efficiency and infrastructure expansion. JNPA handles roughly half of the container traffic passing through India’s major ports and has benefited from capacity additions, digitalisation and improved logistics connectivity.

Meanwhile, APM Terminals-owned Pipavav Port, ranked 28th. Mundra slipped five places in the 2025 rankings to 30th position. Visakhapatnam Port declined 34 places in the ranking to 104th position in 2025.

The CPPI accounts for non-productive periods spent waiting or anchored in port during disruptions, a trend that has been especially evident during recent global crises.
