The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a mandatory digital-only toll collection system across all toll plazas on national highways, commencing April 10, 2026. This policy eliminates cash transactions entirely, marking a significant advancement toward efficient and transparent infrastructure management.
The measure encompasses more than 900 toll plazas, impacting approximately 10 million daily users. Vehicles equipped with FASTag will utilise dedicated lanes for expedited passage. Non-compliant vehicles will incur a penalty of Rs 200, in addition to double the applicable toll fee, payable digitally on-site. To date, NHAI has distributed over 80 million FASTags, though an estimated 5-7 per cent of vehicles remain unequipped.
This initiative supports India’s broader digital infrastructure agenda and is anticipated to yield annual cost savings exceeding Rs 1 billion for NHAI.
