Centre announces barrier-free toll collection by 2026

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced that the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system will remove toll plaza stops from India’s national highways by the end of 2026. Vehicles will pass at speeds up to 80 kmph as overhead cameras read number plates and automatically deduct fees from linked FASTag accounts, ensuring seamless travel.

The centre highlighted the success of the FASTag annual pass launched in August 2025, adopted by over 4 million private car owners, allowing unlimited crossings at 200 plazas. The MLFF rollout promises fuel savings of Rs 15 billion annually, boosts toll revenue by Rs 60 billion, and ensures transparent, corruption-free collection.

To enforce compliance, vehicle owners must clear all dues, including pending tolls and e-challans during sales or registration renewals.
