MNRE launches hydrogen mobility pilot with NISE-Toyota FCEV trials

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a pilot project to test hydrogen-based solutions in the mobility sector.

The project includes the handover of Toyota’s Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) to the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) for real-world testing. Under the memorandum of understanding , NISE will carry out detailed testing of the hydrogen FCEV in real Indian driving conditions, including heat, dust, traffic congestion, and varied terrain. The trials will run for two years and are expected to generate operational insights that may support wider hydrogen mobility deployment. The assessment of the vehicle by NISE is expected to provide information relevant for future scale-up and supporting the commercialisation of hydrogen-based mobility in the country. Hydrogen FCEVs reportedly operate without noise, produce only water vapour, and are increasingly being adopted for diverse transport and stationary power applications globally. Furthermore, the initiative underscores the partnership between industry, research institutions, and government under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
