NHAI reduces toll collection costs by 44 per cent via contract reforms and tighter monitoring

The cost of toll collection at public-funded toll plazas has decreased by 44 per cent or around Rs 20.62 billion. Toll collection expenses decreased from Rs 47.36 billion in 2023-24 to Rs 26.74 billion in 2024-25. About Rs 226.81 billion of the Rs 274.17 billion in tolls collected in FY 2023-24 were sent to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Approximately Rs 288.23 billion were collected by the toll agencies in FY 2024-25, of which Rs 261.49 billion were sent to the authorities.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) credited the savings to a number of actions taken by the authority, including prompt bidding, careful monitoring of existing contracts, and the removal of a clause allowing for a three-month presumed extension.

Moreover, in order to foster trust and boost toll bid participation, NHAI has been interacting with the “All India User Fee Collection Federation” on a regular basis to discuss problems and obstacles that the toll collection agencies encounter.
