Union Cabinet approves Pune metro phase 1A project

The union cabinet has approved the detailed project report for the 5.46 km extension of Pune metro’s purple line, connecting Swargate to Katraj.

The funding for the extension has been secured through various sources, including Rs 3.98 billion from the government of Maharashtra as equity, Rs 1.16 billion in interest-free loans from the government of Maharashtra, Rs 1.81 billion in grants from the Pune Municipal Corporation for land acquisition, Rs 3.98 billion from the Government of India as equity, Rs 1.16 billion in interest-free loans from the government of India, and Rs 15.4 billion from institutional loans.

The extension is projected to handle significant passenger traffic, with estimated daily ridership of 95,000 in 2027, 158,000 in 2037, 187,000 in 2047, and 197,000 in 2057.

The Swargate-Katraj extension will be entirely underground and include three new stations. The project is estimated to cost Rs 29.54 billion and is set for completion by February 2029.
