Indian Railways partners with IIT Kanpur for developing country’s first hydrogen fuelled rail locomotive

Indian Railways (IR) has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur for manufacturing India’s first hydrogen fuelled rail locomotive. It will be developed at electric loco shed, FMGD (Fazalganj) in Kanpur. Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur has also set up a lab named Centre for Railway Research specially for building the technology of the engine.

IR has allocated Rs 5 billion for this project. Additionally, the startups of IIT Kanpur will also contribute in building and providing vital parts and components for the locomotive.
