MoRTH rolls out new Rs 72.7 billion scheme for road safety

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has planned a new six-year state support programme worth Rs 72.7 billion to reduce the fatality rate by 30 per cent by March 2027. MoRTH will lend budgetary support of Rs 36.35 billion, with an amount of Rs 18.18 billion each being secured as loan from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Of the total cost, Rs 67.25 billion will be disbursed to 14 states based on their performance, while MoRTH will use Rs 5.45 billion for capacity building activities. It is centrally sponsored and will be implemented in 14 states that are currently contributing 85 per cent of the total road fatalities in India.
