Indian major ports register decline of 14.26 per cent in traffic during April-September 2020

During April-September 2020, the Indian major ports handled 298.55 mt of traffic, as compared to 348.23 mt in the corresponding period of 2019, registering a decline of 14.26 per cent. However, the extent of quantity decline, year on year, has reduced since July 2020, suggesting a gradual recovery. Deendayal port handled the maximum traffic at 53.37 mt, followed by Paradip port (52.08 mt) and Visakhapatnam port (32.77 mt). In terms of growth, all the major ports registered a decline except for Mormugao port. The ports which witnessed the maximum decline are Kamarajar (31.63 per cent), Chennai (25.71 per cent), Cochin (24.42 per cent), the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) (21.71 per cent) and Kolkata (18.75 per cent).
