The regional rapid transit system (RRTS) project involves the development of a semi-high speed rail network connecting Delhi to existing and upcoming economic centres nearby. It comprises three corridors connecting Delhi to Panipat, Meerut and Alwar in its first phase. Civil works are currently under way for the 82.15 km Delhi-Meerut corridor. The 17 km Duhai-Sahibabad section is expected to begin passenger operations by March 2023 and the entire corridor is likely to open by 2025. In May 2019, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) granted in-principle approval to finance the Rs 300 billion Delhi-Meerut corridor. Pre-construction activities have begun for the 164 km Delhi-Alwar corridor and the detailed project report is being finalised for the 103 km Delhi-Panipat corridor. Once completed, the RRTS project is expected to ease road congestion in the NCR.
