The Ministry of Power has notified the Draft National Electricity Data Sharing Framework, 2026. The framework aims to enable structured, standardised, secure and accessible electricity sector data to support planning, operations, regulation and research.
The proposed framework covers datasets created and maintained by entities across the electricity sector value chain and seeks to facilitate non-discriminatory access while protecting critical information infrastructure. Notably, while the adoption of the framework will remain voluntary, it has been proposed to establish a National Electricity Data Centre and the National Electricity Data Portal to facilitate data sharing. The framework classifies shareable datasets into two categories: Public and Access Controlled. Public datasets, such as installed capacity and renewable statistics, will be available through open access. Access Controlled datasets, such as feeder-level operational data and de-identified smart meter data, will require registration. The draft framework also provides for inter-sector data sharing and third-party data sharing, among other measures.
