Indian Railway (IR) is likely to utilise nuclear power for achieving its net zero carbon emissions target by 2030. For this purpose, IR is expected to consult with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) soon. It needs to acquire a renewable power capacity of about 30,000 megawatts (MW) to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030. Therefore, it is planning to collaborate with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), among others for renewable energy usage.
Further, IR is planning to have their own captive use power plants, small reactors and captive power generating units. Besides, during 2023-24, IR has installed solar power plants and wind power plants having capacities of 147 MW and 103 MW, respectively.
