The Chandigarh Administration plans to lay a 165 km long distribution network for tertiary treated (TT) water in the city to ensure its full utilisation. The work is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025.
At present, around 92.5 million litre per day (mld) of TT water is generated in Chandigarh, of which 38.5 mld is supplied to 680 parks, gardens, green belts and nurseries for irrigation and more than 2,800 private residences for watering lawns. TT water will be supplied to all 1,800 parks, roundabouts, and industrial areas in Chandigarh upon the expansion of the water network. Additionally, the under-construction public toilets are also being provided with dual pumping for the use of TT water.
As a part of the work, three underground reservoirs (UGRs) at the sewage treatment plants in Raipur Kalan, Maloya and Diggian will be constructed. The UGR planned at Diggian will have a capacity of 4.5 million litre per day (mld) and the UGR at Maloya and Raipur Kalan with 9 mld capacity each. It is also reported that the distribution network will be laid in the left-out areas of the Industrial Area, phase 1 and 2; Maloya, Dadu Majra, Dhanas, Kishangarh, Khuda Lahora, Makhan Majra, Mauli Jagran villages, Subash Nagar and Indira Colony.
