Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has secured $70 million in blue financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for developing shore-power infrastructure across its terminals. The Rs 6.5 billion project will allow berthed vessels to switch off diesel auxiliary engines and use electricity supplied from the shore.
Implemented in two phases over two to three years, the project will include 33-kV substations, cable systems, frequency converters and shore-side connections. JNPA expects the initiative to reduce carbon emissions by 63 per cent and harmful air pollution by up to 90 per cent. The facility is targeted for completion by January 2028 and will initially focus on one container terminal before expanding to other terminals.
