Ministry of Railways (MoR) has planned four-laning of seven high-density network (HDN) routes of Indian Railways (IR) for capacity expansion. The routes include Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Chennai, Chennai-Mumbai, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Howrah, and Delhi-Guwahati. These routes will be able to operate four railway lines.
Currently, HDN routes cover around 11,000 km (16 per cent) of IR’s network and manage about 41 per cent of India’s total freight traffic.
