Indian Railways (IR) has operationalised first long haul (1.3 km) double stack container train on Jwaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) (Maharashtra)-Varnama (Gujarat) stretch of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). It transported 360 twenty-foot equivalent (TEUs) of load from JNPT to CONCOR’s Goods Cargo Terminal at Varnama, covering a distance of 422 km.
Moreover, the leading rake carried 1,817 tonnes of load, while the trailing rake carried 2,105 tonnes of load. With this, fewer trains will be required for transportation of this large volume of freight, also reducing the transit time and increasing efficiency.
