GMR Airports Limited (GMR AERO) has assumed operational control of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, Maharashtra, under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL), under the 30-year concession, will carry out a phased modernisation and expansion of the airport. It includes the development of an integrated terminal, expansion of airside infrastructure and development of a cargo facility to handle 20,000 metric tonnes, among other developments. The first phase targets the expansion of terminal capacity to 3 mppa, with future phases to take the capacity to 30 mppa. The first phase of airport modernisation is scheduled to be completed by 2029. It aims to create a future-ready aviation ecosystem and position Nagpur as an aviation, logistics and cargo hub. In addition, the airport will be among the 30 airports planned for integration into the new hub-and-spoke model.
