The Union Government has launched India’s first hydrogen train, having 1,200 kilowatts (kW) hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system at Jind in Haryana on July 17, 2026. It has been developed under Indian Railways, with Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) formulating the technical specifications and leading the design approval process. The trainset has been integrated by M/s Medha Servo Drives Private Limited, while Integral Coach Factory (ICF) contributed to the train’s theme and exterior design.
It consists of total 10 coaches which includes two driving power cars and eight trailer coaches and will cover a distance of 89 km on Jind-Sonipat route under the Northern Railways (NR) zone. The approved speed of the train is 75 km per hour (kmph), while its design speed is 110 kmph. Besides, hydrogen refuelling and storage facility has also been built at Jind with capacity to store 3,000 kg of hydrogen.
