The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has granted in-principle approval to two major maritime infrastructure projects under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS) to strengthen India’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities. A nearly 2,000-acre Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster will be developed at Kuchhadi in Porbandar, Gujarat, with an annual production capacity of 1.2-1.5 million gross tonnage, creating a major hub for commercial vessel construction.
The government has also approved financial assistance for a Rs 15.7 billion ship repair facility at Vadinar, jointly developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited and Deendayal Port Authority. Equipped with modern docks and marine infrastructure, the facility will enable domestic repair of large vessels, reducing reliance on foreign yards.
