South Western Railway (SWR) has initiated the land acquisition process for the proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper maintenance depot at Thanisandra in Bengaluru, Karnataka, at an estimated cost of Rs 2.7 billion, with a formal notification issued for acquisition of 13.95 hectares across 14 private land parcels.
The depot is being developed on the Channasandra-Yelahanka railway section near the existing Thanisandra railway station. The facility will feature specialised workshops, pits, cranes and equipment for scheduled maintenance of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in South India. Similar depots are also being set up at Bijwasan and Anand Vihar in Delhi, Jodhpur in Rajasthan and Wadi Bandar in Mumbai.
