The Uttar Pradesh government has received over Rs 162 billion for sewage infrastructure and river pollution abatement projects under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). This allocation is about 45 per cent of the total sewage infrastructure investment which has been approved nationwide under the NMCG. Of the total 80 projects sanctioned under the scheme, 53 have already been completed. Besides, out of the total planned sewage treatment capacity of 2,701 million litres per day (mld), about 1,520 mld is operational. Reportedly, as of now, water pollution is limited to specific stretches – Farrukhabad to Old Rajapur, Dalmau and Mirzapur downstream to Tarighat. These have been classified under the “Priority V” category, representing the second lowest level of pollution and ranking just above the “Unpolluted” category.
