IR approves hydrogen fuel cell based DEMU train on Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana

IR has approved a hydrogen fuel cell-based diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train for the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana, under the Northern Railway (NR) zone. The train will comprise 10 coaches and operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. It will be able to deliver a total power output of 1,200 kW using distributed power rolling stock technology, through which the power is distributed not only in a single locomotive but across the entire train. IR has also mandated regular cleaning and monitoring of hydrogen-related sensors along with leak and flame detectors. Further, the zone has been directed to comply with the maintenance and safety norms of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation, Commission of Railway Safety, Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, and international safety certification agencies.
