Siemens Mobility has despatched the first D9 electric freight locomotive of 9,000 horsepower (hp) capacity to IR for commercial operations. The project is delivered under a life cycle partnership model, which involves design, manufacturing, commissioning and 35 years of full-service maintenance. Siemens secured a contract from IR in January 2023 for the supply of 1,200 of these locomotives. It is a six-axle locomotive adhering to European standard EN 14363, and designed to operate at a maximum speed of 120 kmph. It also features advanced digital systems such as Railigent X for predictive maintenance and data-driven performance optimisation. During its normal operation, the locomotive with an axle load of 22.5 tonnes can transport loads of up to 5,800 tonnes on the defined gradients.
