The Kerala government has inaugurated Phase I of the Akkulam-Chettuva waterway project, in February 2026. Additionally, the corridor is likely to be extended to the Vizhinjam international seaport. The project involved the development of the 280 km long Akkulam-Chettuva waterway in Kerala. It is part of the 616 km long Kovalam-Bekal waterway project, which links lakes, rivers and man-made canals across the state.
