A new 42 km highway between Dehradun and Mussoorie has been approved by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This project is anticipated to reduce travel time between the two towns from up to 90 minutes to just 30 minutes.
With an estimated cost of Rs 35 billion, the proposed two-lane corridor would start at Jhajhra in Dehradun and run all the way to Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie. It would provide a direct substitute for the current 34 km hill road, which is often congested with tourists.
To facilitate travel over the delicate Himalayan landscape, two tunnels are to be constructed as part of the project. Of the two tunnels, one will be 2.9 km below the George Everest summit, while the other will be 2 km above the Everest House section. These passages aim to get around steep inclines, tight curves, and areas prone to landslides that presently hinder vehicle movement.
