ADB approves second tranche of loan under Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase II

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved the second tranche of loan worth Rs 217.39 billion ($240 million) under the Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase II.

The loan covers civil and system works for metro line 3’s elevated section (Sholinganallur–SIPCOT-2), line 4’s underground section (Lighthouse–Kodambakkam), and key system components for line 5, including power, traction, and telecommunications. It is also likely to support upgrades to multimodal interchange areas to ensure smoother transfers between metro, buses, bicycles, and other last-mile transport options.

The project involves development of 118.9 km three metro corridors (Corridor III, IV and V) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs 632.46 billion. It is mostly underground with an elevated section confined to a few short stretches and consists of 128 stations in total.
