India secures first global order to build LNG powered container ships

India has secured its first-ever global order to construct liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ships, valued at around $300 million. The contract was formalised via a letter of intent between CMA CGM, a leading global container carrier, and Cochin Shipyard Limited, under which six LNG‑powered box ships will be built in India. Each vessel will have a capacity of 1,700 twenty‑foot equivalent units (TEUs).
