Rollout of multi-lane free flow tolling system begins

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started the process of implementing a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling system. The NHAI promoted, Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), along with road concessionaires and financial institutions, has begun inviting tenders for implementing this barrier-less tolling system.

The transactions will be enabled by reading of FASTag and vehicle registration number (VRN) by high performance radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. This tolling system will comprise of a bank or a financial entity along with a system integrator.

As per the government plans, the MLFF system will be launched on 25 national highway (NH) fee plazas in 2025-26. Banks have already placed their bids for around seven projects, including ICICI Bank, Airtel Payment Bank, JIO Payments and IDFC First.
