Union Government inaugurates three stretches under Kolkata Metro Project

The Union Government inaugurated 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch under the Kolkata East West Metro Project on August 22, 2025. With this the project now stands complete. The project involved development of a 16.6 km long metro connecting Sector 5, Salt Lake in Kolkata to Howrah Maidan through an underwater metro track at an estimated cost of Rs 100 billion in West Bengal.

Besides, it inaugurated the 7 km Noapara-Airport stretch along with the 4.4 km Ruby-Belghata stretch under the Kolkata Metro Expansion Project. The project involves expansion of the existing metro rail network in Kolkata in West Bengal by 88.55 km with an investment of Rs 193.94 billion. The expansion plan includes Joka to Benoy Badal Dinesh (BBD) Bagh-Diamond Park (18.72 km), Noapara to Barasat via Airport (Bimanbandar) (18.13 km), Airport to Kavi Subhas (New Garia) via Rajarhat (32 km), Baranagar to Barrackpore and Dakshineswar (14.5 km), and Dum Dum to Baranagar (5.2 km).
