The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released a policy that will enable safe and secure sharing of critical data under the National Transport Repository (NTR) with the private sector and state governments. The goal is to guarantee uniformity and legal compliance in the exchange of data.
In addition to data provided by e-Challan, the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR), and the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag system, the NTR also contains driving licenses (DLs) and vehicle registration certificates (RCs) gathered through VAHAN and SARATHI. More than 390 million car records, 220 million driver’s license records, and associated databases are currently stored there.
The policy lays out steps and protections to guarantee safe and authorised data exchange. For VAHAN, SARATHI, e-Challan, eDAR, and FASTag, a formalised framework has been established that addresses datasets, sharing methods, and the request and approval procedure. Controlled data sharing can improve services and help government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions with their research and data-driven decision-making.
The policy’s goals include minimising work duplication, facilitating legitimate data access, and integrating external applications with the Transport National Register. Additionally, it aims to enhance services for government agencies, the private sector, researchers, and residents.
