As per the centre, there are currently 1,240 national highway projects spanning around 29,406 km and costing around Rs 7.8 trillion being constructed across the country. These projects are in various stages of construction and are expected to be constructed in phases by 2028-29.
The annual plan for the development of approximately 19,555 km of NHs, has already been prepared for 2025-2026.
The centre has made maintaining the current network of national highways a top priority and has developed a system to guarantee maintenance and repair (M&R), including the prompt fixing of potholes on all NHs, through responsible maintenance organisations.
