Centre builds 16,207 km of highways and sanctions over 69,000 km for railways in the northeast region

In order to improve infrastructure and economic development in the northeastern states, the centre has constructed around 16,207 km of national highways and approved an investment of Rs 693.42 billion for railway projects.

Around 12 railway projects have been approved, spanning 777 km, including 8 new lines and 4 doublings, with a total cost of Rs 693.42 billion. Of these, around 278 km have been operationalised, and Rs 416.76 billion has been invested up to March 2025. The projects are partially or entirely located in the North East Region (NER).

In the NER, 17,637 road projects totalling 89,436 km including 2,398 bridges have been approved under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY); around 16,469 of these projects, totalling 80,933 km and 2,108 bridges, have been completed.
