Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) plans to invest Rs 10 billion in expanding its Katupalli (Kattupalli) shipbuilding complex near Chennai. The project is scheduled to begin in October 2025 and will span three years.
Despite receiving environmental and coastal clearances back in 2009, the shipyard currently operates well below capacity, constructing around 15 new ships and repairing 30 ships annually, compared to its full permissions for 25 new builds, 60 repairs, and 50,000 tonnes/ year modular fabrication.
The development works will involve building additional infrastructure including fabrication, assembly, paint, blasting shops, warehouses, office and residential buildings, and a skill-development centre, along with landscaping and greenbelt areas within L&T’s existing 892.11 acre yard.
Once completed, these upgrades will enable the yard to reach its approved capacity levels. The Katupalli facility is already equipped with dry and wet berths, a warship design centre and supports construction and repair in both defence and commercial segments.
