Chennai Port Authority is reviving the outer harbour project at Chennai Port. A technological feasibility assessment will be conducted. The authority is considering reclaiming the nearly 200 acres behind the container berth, which would be 2 km long. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 80 billion.
In 2013, the project was revamped as the development of outer harbour project, focusing exclusively on clean, multipurpose cargo handling, with an estimated investment of Rs 51 billion. A bidding process launched in 2014, however, failed to attract any interest from potential developers, leading to the decision to abandon the proposal.
