Indian Railways to modernise train control system for enhanced safety and efficiency

Indian Railways (IR) is likely to modernise its train control system with advanced technologies leveraging real-time monitoring tools, predictive algorithms, and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted planning. The goal is to enable effective traffic management, enhance safety, and improve the operational efficiency of trains. The existing fragmented and manually managed systems will be replaced with an integrated, tech-driven approach, with a particular focus on freight-intensive corridors, high-speed and mixed traffic routes.

The new system will feature an integrated command centre connecting various departments to support better decision-making in train movement management, route planning, crisis response, etc.

Reportedly, IR will draw insights from countries such as Japan, Germany, Russia, France, Switzerland, and Spain, but it does not plan to import a ready-made system. The Railway Board (RB) is expected to map out the plan for this new system soon.
