India to build first indigenous polar research vessel

In a landmark step, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) of Kolkata has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway’s Kongsberg to construct India’s first-ever indigenously built polar research vessel (PRV). The PRV will be designed to meet the requirements of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and will be equipped with advanced scientific instrumentation for deep-sea exploration and climate research.

The initiative supports the government’s ‘Make in India’ mission and is expected to significantly boost domestic shipbuilding expertise.
