Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Limited has started building 13 hybrid ferries for the Kolkata Metropolitan Area to modernise river transport along the Hooghly River. The fleet includes six twin-deck ferries (200-passenger capacity) and seven single-deck ferries (100-passenger capacity), with a combined cost of around Rs 2.26 billion.
These all-weather, air-conditioned ferries aim to replace ageing diesel vessels, enhance commuter comfort, and reduce pollution. The ferries will operate between Triveni and Diamond Harbour. The project is being implemented for the West Bengal Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
