The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is set to develop 12 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Delhi. The initiative aims to mitigate the dumping of untreated sewage from the Najafgarh drain into the Yamuna river.
Construction works have begun on Chhawla STP having a capacity of 49.5 million litres per day. Alongside, DJB has also started work on 11 smaller and decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) and pumping stations. The development work is likely to be completed in 15 months while one month is reserved for commissioning and two months for trial and run of DSTPs.
The Chhawla STP and the DSTPs are expected to be located in Jaffarpur, Galibpur, Khera Dabar, Hasanpur, Kazipur, Shikarpur, Sarangpur, Kair, Kakrola, Kangaheri and Dichon Kalan. These facilities will meet stringent standards, with effluent limits of under 10 milligram per litre for biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids.
