Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) and the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) inaugurated a production line for the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains at TRSL’s manufacturing unit in Uttarpara, Kolkata on April 24, 2025. TRSL expects to launch a prototype of the train in 2026. This initiative is part of a contract awarded by the Indian Railways for the design and manufacture of 80 Vande Bharat Sleeper train sets, with an investment of Rs 240 billion, which also includes long-term maintenance for 35 years.
Besides, the Uttarpara plant has an annual capacity of 300 coaches, which is being scaled up to 850, and it is capable of producing both stainless steel and aluminium coaches.
