On April 23, 2025, the Chief Minister of Karnataka approved the Mangaluru Water Metro project. It will connect Bajal and Maravoor across the Netravati and Gurupura rivers.
The Karnataka Maritime Board has been directed to prepare a detailed project report for the Mangaluru Water Metro. The project aims to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity to underserved areas, and promote sustainable urban transport.
With this, Karnataka becomes the second state in India, after Kerala, to launch a water metro system. A dedicated water transport training centre will also be set up in Mangaluru.
