The trials have commenced for the new air traffic control (ATC) tower at the Kolkata Airport on March 24, 2025. Trials were carried out for two hours between 2 pm and 4 pm during which around 40 aircraft arrivals and departures were seen.
Two-hour trials from Monday to Friday are expected to continue for the next three months, prior to increasing the operational duration.
Modern systems and equipment at the facility including the new generation automation system, approach radar, etc. are yet to be selected, and a modified version of the existing system will be used meanwhile. The commencement of full-fledged operations is expected to take around 2 years.
