Highway construction declines by around 8 per cent in April-January 2024-25

In the first 10 months of 2024-25, the pace of highway construction has declined by around 8.5 per cent, year-on-year, reaching 7,000 km. The provisional construction target set for 2024-25 is 10,421 km, 15 per cent lower than the target set for 2023-24.

In the last four years, around 51–58 per cent of project execution has taken place during the last four months of each year. As per ICRA, if the trend continues, the road construction is expected to be between 10,000 km to 10,500 km during 2024-25.

Moreover, the project awarding activity has picked up pace. During the first 10 months of 2024-25, around 4,204 km has been awarded, a 20 per cent increase over the same period last year. Compared to the 8,581 km awarded last year, the awarding target for 2024-25 is set at 12,900 km.
