Indian Railways (IR) is likely to roll out its high-powered freight locomotive with 9,000 horsepower (hp) by the end of March 2025. The Rolling Stock Workshop in Dahod, Gujarat, is manufacturing the locomotive, which will be capable of hauling freight trains weighing between 4,500 to 5,000 tonnes at a top speed of 120 km per hour (kmph). Further, it will be equipped with a digital tracking system, a three-phase propulsion system, and KAVACH, among other features. Furthermore, 89 per cent of the components used in this locomotive have been manufactured in India.
Besides, the manufacturing unit will develop broad gauge electric locomotives for IR and standard gauge electric locomotives for export purposes by 2028.
