The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) secured a loan of Rs 73.26 billion from Union Bank of India for implementation of Orange Gate-Marine Drive Underground Road Tunnel Project.
The project involves construction of 6.51 km twin-tube underground tunnel, with each tunnel accommodating 2+2 traffic lanes, 1+1 emergency lanes, and pedestrian walkways, underground road tunnel connectivity including approaches on design build basis on Orange Gate at Eastern Freeway linking Mankhurd to Chembur Junction and the coastal road at Marine Drive. The left-hand side tunnel for south bound traffic is 4.5 km while that of the right-hand side tunnel is 2 km. The total length of alignment is 9.5 km. Tunnel’s depth will be approximately 40 m from ground level. The total cost of the tunnel project is estimated at Rs 91.58 billion.
